The Festival opens at 7:00 p. m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 with CAMERA OBSCURA from award-winning Argentine director Maria Victoria Menis. Questions of beauty and self-image are examined in this enchanting film about an “ugly duckling” who recedes into obscurity among a colony of Argentine Jewish immigrants until her world changes when a nomadic French photographer is invited to take a family portrait. The second opening night film begins at 9:15 p.m. with A MATTER OF SIZE, a comedy that follows an overweight Israeli chef who works in a Japanese restaurant and is seeking happiness as a Sumo wrestler. Coffee and dessert will be served in the lobby between the two screenings. Jewish comedy continues at Noon on Sunday, Feb. 7 with the screening of YOO-HOO MRS. GOLDBERG, a humorous and illuminating documentary of television pioneer Gertrude Berg. Award-winning filmmaker Aviva Kempner presents a loving tribute to Berg who was the creator, principle writer and star of “The Goldbergs,” a popular radio show which later became television's first character-driven domestic sitcom. The second Sunday feature, MAX MINSKY AND ME begins at 2:15 p. m. This charming, coming of age film tells the story of a super smart 12 year-old who wants to become a star basketball player so she can travel to Luxembourg to meet her heart throb, Prince Edouard. Conflict arises when her mother thinks her time is better spent concentrating on her forthcoming Bat Mitzvah. This heartwarming film is one of the few German films that depicts modern day dilemmas of the country's re-born Jewish community. Coffee and sweets will be served in the lobby between screenings. |
