It’s Christmas time in the Jura mountains. Michel (Franck Dubosc, who also directed the film) and Cathy (the irresistible Laure Calamy), a couple strained by time and financial difficulties, hardly speak to each other anymore. That is, until the day Michel, swerving to avoid a bear on the road, collides with another car and, through a series of hilarious events, kills both of its occupants.
With two dead bodies and two million dollars in the trunk, Michel and Cathy suddenly have a lot to talk about, and even more reasons to stay silent. When the local police chief Roland (Benoît Poelvoorde, Romantics Anonymous - SFFF 2012) and his team begin to investigate, Michel and Cathy go to increasingly desperate and absurd lengths to cover their tracks, burying themselves under an avalanche of lies. Soon the whole village is involved.
How to Make a Killing stars Dubosc (Camping - SFFF 2009, 10 Days with Dad - Virtual Cinema 2021) and Calamy (My Lover, My Donkey and I - Virtual MiniFest 2020, Full Time - SFFF 2022), two of France’s most beloved actors, united together on screen for the first time. They have a remarkable comedic and tender chemistry that keeps the audience rooting for them.
Set in a snowy mountain village, with a mix of grim humor and mystery, the highly entertaining How to Make a Killing is reminiscent of the Coen Brothers’ Fargo but with a definite French spin. Dubosc's third film as director (he also co-wrote the screenplay) is his most accomplished. It is funny and dark but with an underlying tenderness that, in the end, makes it a real – if slightly twisted – Christmas tale. |
