Gabrielle (Alice Isaaz) has just joined the crew of a prestigious long-running news program. She is only in charge of the AV equipment, but it’s a good first step to gain professional experience. Gabrielle is here to learn and thrilled to work closely with seasoned reporters who cover war zones as well as fashion shows, infiltrate Chinese triads, and follow environmental activists in action. There is not a dull moment!
Gabrielle must prove herself quickly and be ready at all times to support the team. She has admired them from afar. Now, she gets to know them up-close: Camille (Pascale Arbillot), Damien (Vincent Elbaz), Alex (Pierre Lottin), Kosta (Jean-Charles Clichet), and Vincent (Roschdy Zem, Oh Mercy! – SFFF 2020) – the charismatic editor-in-chief.
The program is facing the usual challenges. TV audiences are shrinking, budgets keep getting cut, and the corporate bosses are no help. After fifteen years on the air, time has taken its toll on the team. Maybe it’s time to let younger people like Gabrielle invent their own way of telling the news? On the Pulse successfully mixes drama and comedy to remind us of the importance of investigative journalism.
We are particularly pleased to include Alix Delaporte’s latest film in our 2024 film lineup. We’ve admired her work for a long time! In 2007, we presented her short film Comment on freine dans une descente ?, and in 2011, her first feature Angèle and Tony, which we consider one of the most outstanding films we have shown over the years. On the Pulse! is Delaporte’s third feature.
Director’s Statement: “Like my characters, I started out as a reporter, filming life as it’s happening and relying on instincts to ride the unpredictable flow of it. My top priority in directing this film was to recreate this razor edge alertness and use it to capture the tangle of rarefied emotions and heightened human bonds created in the field, to make it as vivid and moving as possible.” |
