Love and math gloriously mix in Marguerite’s Theorem, an original and crowd-pleaser rom-com. Marguerite (Ella Rumpf, winner of the 2024 César for Best New Talent), a brilliant doctoral student in mathematics at the prestigious Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS), and the only girl in her class, is finishing her doctoral project. Marguerite’s life is entirely dedicated to her work. She lives on campus and the only people she interacts with are her faculty advisor, Professor Werner (the always brilliant Jean-Pierre Darroussin, All Your Faces – 2023 Fall Virtual Screenings), and her mother, by phone (Clotilde Courau).

One day, as she presents an intermediate project report in front of an audience of peers, another student (Julien Frison) points out an error that completely invalidates her proof and reduces years of work to nothing. Unable to face the humiliation, Marguerite suddenly abandons her dissertation, scholarship, and sheltered academic environment to start anew. Her mathematic mind is ill suited for the real world, but it can also prove very useful when it comes to paying the rent. With the help of new friends, Marguerite learns to open up to life, gains a fresh perspective on her research, and realizes that love and mathematics can coexist!

ROMANTIC COMEDY

REVIEWS

As surprising as it is stirring, this marvel surprises with its subject: a mathematical romance! Anna Novion’s third feature film has all the elements of a scientific and romantic thriller, painting the portrait of a young woman as unique as she is endearing.
