Blanche (Virginie Efira, Revoir Paris – SFFF 2023) meets the charismatic Grégoire (Melvil Poupaud, By the Grace of God – MiniFest 2019) at a party she is dragged to by her twin sister Rose (also Efira). Soon, a passionate affair ensues. Despite Rose’s serious reservations about Grégoire, Blanche quickly marries her prince charming, and suddenly, they must relocate for Grégoire’s job. Despite not wanting to leave her sister and mother, Blanche agrees to move far away, and she and Grégoire start their own family. Over time, as Grégoire’s behavior turns more and more erratic and controlling, Blanche finds respite in her job as a middle school teacher, but is too proud and committed to her marriage to confide in any of her work friends. Little by little, she comes to the realization that she is caught in the grip of a deeply possessive and dangerous man whom she must escape, one way or another, in order to survive.

Just the Two of Us (L’amour et les forêts) is a closely observed and tense psychological thriller, a case study of how strong, intelligent women can end up in abusive relationships. The film is adapted from Éric Reinhardt’s prize-winning novel L’amour et les forêts by two women, director Valérie Donzelli and Audrey Diwan (Happening). It won the 2024 César for Best Adapted Screenplay.

With strong supporting performances by our 2019 SFFF guest Romane Bohringer (In the Move for Love – SFFF 2019), as well as from singer Bernard Belin and Virginie Ledoyen.

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

REVIEWS

A solid and often uncomfortably tense domestic drama.
Wendy Ide - Screen Daily

[I]t’s first and foremost a feminist work of truth, offering up challenging but wonderful characters which Virginie Efira and Melvil Poupaud portray with great talent.
