In 2015, Inès Léraud (portrayed by Céline Sallette, Little Ones – SFFF 2023, Red Soil – SFFF 2021), a young environmental journalist, is contacted by a whistleblower who convinces her to investigate green algae blooms linked to several suspicious deaths in Brittany.
Determined to carry out her own investigation, Inès moves to Brittany with her girlfriend Judith (Nina Meurisse, Camille – SFFF 2020). When her “Breton Chronicles” program, denouncing the devastation inflicted by intensive livestock farming on the ecosystems of Britanny, begins broadcasting on national radio, Inès starts receiving threats. She slowly realizes that corporate and political forces in the region are working to stop her from uncovering and exposing the shocking truth.
A recent UNESCO study found that 70 percent of the environmental journalists interviewed said they had been the target of “attacks, threats, or pressure.” Green Tide retraces the fight of one of those journalists: Inès Léraud. A gripping environmental thriller in the vein of Todd Haynes’ Dark Waters, Green Tide is also the sensitive portrait of a committed woman, and a love story.
Green Tide is based on the graphic novel Green Tide, The Forbidden Story, by Inès Léraud and Pierre Van Hove, who both co-wrote the screenplay with director Pierre Jolivet. |
