1947. On a beach in Normandy, Madeleine, a single mother and waitress at a beachfront hotel-restaurant, meets François, a gentle and shy archeology student, estranged from his wealthy family. They have an immediate rapport:  two lost souls finding each other. Madeleine is honest with François, and we know from the powerful opening sequence what she is trying to leave behind. The world that François is running from is only slowly revealed, to us and Madeleine.

Inspired by the films of German-born Hollywood master Douglas Sirk, Along Came Love is a sweeping melodrama, beginning in the aftermath of the Second World War and unfolding over several decades. The original French title, Le Temps d’aimer, which translates into “Time to love,” is a direct homage to Sirk’s 1958 film A Time to Love and a Time to Die.

With her fourth feature, director Katell Quillévéré (Suzanne – SFFF 2014, Heal the Living – also presented on Closing Night in 2017) draws from her family history to tell the story of a remarkable love between a man and a woman haunted by secrets in puritanical post-war France. Carried by the performances of Anaïs Demoustier (also in Daaaaaali ! playing this year at the SFFF) and Vincent Lacoste (Lost Illusions – SFFF 2022, Faithful – SFFF 2021), Along Came Love reminds us that love doesn’t always follow the same, traditional model – but that does not mean it is not love.
