On the night of December 5, 1986, in Paris, as thousands of students protested against unpopular university reforms, two young men of Algerian descent were killed by the police. The emotional drama Our Brothers recounts the attempts by the police to cover up these killings, and the struggle of the two men’s families to uncover the truth.
As students take to the street that night, Malik Oussekine (Adam Amara) is attending a jazz concert. When he exits the venue, he accidentally wanders into the thick of the demonstration and is pursued and beaten by three police officers from the motorized voltigeurs brigade. That same night, a few hours prior, Abdel Benyahia, another young Frenchman of Algerian origin, was killed by a drunken off-duty police officer in a Paris suburb while attempting to break up a bar fight.
Taking place over the days following that fateful December 5, Our Brothers is an emotional drama that uses real archival images to create a documentary feel and a fantastic cast to convey the personal impact of this true story. The film stars Samir Guesmi (SFFF guest in 2008) as Abdel’s dad, Reda Kateb (Hippocrates – SFFF 2015) as Malik’s brother, Lyna Khoudri (Secret Name – Fall Virtual Screenings 2022) as his sister, and Raphaël Personnaz as the inspector in charge of both cases.
As riots threaten to erupt, the police force and the government collude to hide the truth of what really happened that night. The families of both victims, while never meeting, struggle to find out for themselves.
To this day, the memory of Malik Oussekine’s death is still vivid for many French people. In the current social context in France, Our Brothers couldn’t be more relevant.
