It is said that every investigator has a crime that haunts them, a case that hurts more than the others, without always knowing why. For police captain Vivés, that case is the murder of Clara. A gripping true-crime drama, The Night of the 12th won six 2023 César Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Yohan Vivés (Bastien Bouillon – 2023 César for Best Upcoming Actor – and recently seen in this year’s Winter Shorts Fest film Bye Bye), is a young and ambitious police captain. He has just been appointed group leader at the Grenoble Criminal Squad when the murder case that will change his life lands on his desk. Clara, a beautiful 21-year-old young woman, was gruesomely assaulted while walking home from a party on the night of October 12, 2016. There are no witnesses. No apparent motive.
Seconded by grumpy, burned-out veteran Marceau (Bouli Lanners – 2023 César for Best Supporting Actor – and a veteran of many SFFF films, most recently seen as “God” in Delete History – SFFF 2021), Vivés investigates Clara's life and relationships. But what starts as a professional and methodical investigation soon turns into a haunting obsession. All the men in Clara’s life turn out to be prospective suspects, but proof is elusive. Only one thing is certain: a man killed a woman on the night of the 12th.
Based on the book by Pauline Guéna, who spent one year embedded with a criminal squad, The Night of the 12th is a fascinating portrait of the day-to-day of police work as well as a compelling denunciation of the ubiquity of misogyny, including inside the police itself.
REVIEWS
Critic’s Pick! A refreshingly grounded picture of crime-fighting.
Nicolas Rapold - The New York Times
A brooding, serpentine investigative drama that brings to mind movies like Zodiac and Memories of Murder, [A] taut and piercing thriller...
Jordan Mintzer - The Hollywood Reporter
“The Night Of The 12th" will emotionally exhaust audiences and get under their skin with its haunting ending…It may be time the police procedural made an arthouse comeback.
Bobby LePire - Film Threat
An engrossing, multi-layered film that astutely delves into the psyche of the people trying to solve the case. Definitely not your typical by-the-numbers crime drama.
