(BANDE ANNONCE)
When a young woman (Leila Muse) gives her baby boy up for adoption right after birth, the process to find him a family starts immediately. The newborn, temporarily named Théo, first lands in the very safe hands of a handsome foster parent, Jean (Gilles Lellouche, C’est La Vie! - MiniFest 2018). Other people in charge include Théo’s concerned caseworker, Karine (Sandrine Kiberlain); Lydie (Olivia Côte), who is tasked with finding him a family; and Mathilde (Clothilde Mollet), who handles Théo’s transfer from his 21-year-old birth mother to the French social system.
Meanwhile, Alice (Élodie Bouchez, Black Tide - MiniFest 2018, and Guy, playing this year at the SFFF), unable to have children of her own, has been fighting to be a mother for more than ten years. After facing many personal setbacks, she is finally ready to welcome a child, just when the Adoption Services are seeking a home for Théo.
In Safe Hands is the story of the meeting between Alice, 41, and Théo, three months old.
Jeanne Herry’s second feature takes us deep into the French child welfare and adoption services system from the moment when the young mother arrives at the hospital to give birth anonymously. (In France, mothers who wish to give up their newborns can do so without identifying themselves, it is called “l’accouchement sous X” or “birth under X” and mothers have three months to go back on their decision). The film culminates in the emotional moment when the baby is finally united with his adoptive mother, creating a story that is both informative and highly affecting.
In Safe Hands relies on the impeccable performances of its cast. Here, Herry reunites with her actresses from Number One Fan (SFFF 2017), Kiberlain (Black Tide - MiniFest 2018, Nine Month Stretch – SFFF 2014, The Women on the 6th Floor – SFFF 2011) and Côte; as well as with her own real-life mother, Miou-Miou. The film was nominated for six 2019 César Awards.
