REVIEWS

On the visual side it’s like Amelie on steroids… A solid cast, lots of attention to the visuals and a defiantly unsophisticated sense of humor are the hallmarks of Albert Dupontel’s follow-up to "The Villain". Jonathan Holland - Hollywood Reporter

Dupontel has crafted a hugely enjoyable, high-energy comedy held together by his chemistry with Kiberlain and a storyline which is both outrageously funny and surprisingly touching. - Judith Prescott French Cinema review

Sandrine Kiberlain has been wonderful in many SFFF films over the years, including one of our early favorites Alias Betty, which we presented in 2003, to the more recent The Women on the 6th Floor in 2011, and A View of Love and Polisse in 2012. She outdoes herself in 9-Month Stretch, for which she won the Best Actress César Award this year. She stars as Judge Ariane Felder, a confirmed bachelorette and icy careerist whose world is turned upside down when she discovers that she’s six months pregnant. Even worse, according to DNA tests, the father is none other Bob Nolan (Albert Dupontel), a.k.a. The Eye Gobbler, an accused murderer with a rap sheet that reads like a Dickens novel.

Dupontel's César wining screenplay is a case against the French justice system and the prosecution is aided by a fierce, sometimes gory, visual wit that gleefully crosses the borders of propriety but never falls from grace. This inventive, pitch black and laugh out loud comedy took the French box office by storm.

With hilarious cameos by The Artist star Jean Dujardin as a sign language interpreter, Yolande Moreau as Bob's mom, filmmakers Gaspar Noé and Jan Kounen as Bob's fellow inmates, and Terry Gilliam (Monty Python, Brazil) as serial killer Charlie Meatson a.k.a.  the "Famous Man Eater." Don't miss them!

The idea of 9-Month Stretch came to Dupontel after seeing Raymond Depardon's documentary  10th District Court (2004), which follows a female judge, Michèle Bernard-Requin, as she hears minor misdemeanor and civil cases. The real life judge also appears in 9-Month Stretch, presiding over Bob Nolan's trial. She also advised Dupontel as he was writing his script.
