Never (…) had the filmmaker reduced her style to this essence, this clarity, this simple lucidity. Olivier Séguret - Libération

A rare caress in these harsh days. Danièle Heymann - Marianne

The warmth radiating from 35 Shots of Rum, smoother than the finest liquor, reminds viewers how rarely movies capture the easygoing love embodied in a functional family, with all its support and tenderness. Claire Denis’ latest may appear whisper-thin on the surface, yet it’s marvelously profound. Jay Weissberg - Variety

A father and daughter's tender relationship is strained by the arrival of a handsome neighbor in Claire Denis' sublime new film.

Claire Denis (Trouble Every Day - SFFF 2002, Friday Night - SFFF 2003) crafts this subtle family drama about the close connection between a widower named Lionel (Alex Descas), a train driver on the RER, and his daughter, Joséphine (Mati Diop). Since the death of her mother when Joséphine was a young girl, she and her father have depended only on one another, living together, almost as a couple, even now that Joséphine has reached adulthood and is a college student. But, Joséphine and Lionel realize that the time for them to move on may have come when a handsome young man (Grégoire Colin) attracts Joséphine's attention

Claire Denis, teaming once again with cinematographer Agnès Godard, offers a magnificently photographed and stylish film about the complexity of father and daughter's love and a father's realization that his daughter is on the verge of independence.
